MIG CO₂ welding, also referred to as MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding, is a variation of the traditional MIG (Metal Inert Gas) process. While the MIG process uses inert gases like Argon, Helium, or their mixtures for shielding the molten weld pool, the CO₂ welding method uses carbon dioxide as the shielding gas. Since CO₂ is an active gas, this technique is technically categorized as MAG welding. It is especially effective for welding carbon and low-alloy steels ranging from 0.059 inches (1.6 mm) up to 6 mm or more in thickness.
